A Dialogue between a Young Lesbian Counseling Student and an Older Straight Male Counselor Educator
Golden, Larry; Davis, Cari
Journal of Creativity in Mental Health, v1 n2 p99-105 2005
There are distinctions between people and they can not be dismissed as merely fascinating differences that make each person unique. Many of these distinctions are between groups that are politically strong or weak, straight and gay, white and black, rich and poor, young and old, healthy and sick. Sharing experiences through storytelling can provide a creative context for students to experience each other and expand their existing worlds and worldviews. When delivered in the spirit of caring curiosity, this exercise can help two people connect with and understand one another. Challenges to this exercise exist. The storyteller must be comfortable with the disclosure and consider the contextual consequences that the disclosure could bring. The listener is also called to look at the storyteller's disclosure contextually by considering it as one aspect of the storyteller's identity or life story. Ultimately, perceptive, thoughtful facilitating is vital to the success of this work.
