This volume of the History of Higher Education Annual contains five articles. Alan Karp's essay, "John Calvin and the Geneva Academy: Roots of the Board of Trustees," discusses the reoganization and government of the Geneva Academy and Calvin's unsuccessful struggle to establish a church independent of lay control. Institutional associations are considered by Hugh Hawkins in "Problems in Categorization and Generalization in the History of American Higher Education: An Approach through the Institutional Associations." Of concern are association research and the role associations have played in the search for shared identifies among colleges. In "Henry Suzzallo and the University of a Thousand Years," Donald T. Williams considers the career of Henry Suzzallo, who was a politically active college president. Another college president and political leader is considered by Courtney Ann Vaughn-Roberson in "The Politics of Education and Reform: Henry Garland Bennett in Oklahoma, 1907-1951." Finally, the development of public higher education systems in Washington and Idaho are compared by Lois A. Fisher in "The Role of Politics in the Organization and Development of Public Higher Education in Idaho and Washington." (SW)
