For the last decade, career and technical education (CTE) funding has seen some ups, but mostly downs. While it received a modest increase in 2002, that increase was swept away in 2008 due to across-the-board cuts. It was difficult for CTE to receive another increase in the early 2000s because every year the Bush Administration proposed to either eliminate Perkins funding, or to cut it significantly. The current Administration has not proposed to eliminate Perkins funding, but it has proposed significant changes and reductions in funding. The current funding situation for CTE continues to be troublesome and discouraging. In this article, the author previews the battles ahead for CTE funding and why advocates need to continue outreach to Members of Congress to stave off funding cuts--or the total elimination of the Perkins Act.
