This experiment in using computer-assisted curriculum planning in two British secondary schools tested the practicability of using computers not only in the annual compilation of school timetables but, more radically, in the characterization of constraints that "knock-on" from one year's timetable to the next. The Oxford School Timetabling System was used. Delay and unanticipated expense resulted in both schools from lack of immediate computer access since errors had to be corrected by phone or mail. The aims of the preliminary project were met in the Hengrove School but initial outcomes were disappointing at the Wells Blue School. In the Hengrove School about 85 percent of original specifications were met and the timetable had been completed by the insertion of a further 7.7 percent of items in a slightly degenerated form by reducing the number of sets provided without alteration of the curriculum, and the insertion of 4.6 percent of items with some structural variation. While such use of computers is still in the preliminary stages, researchers believed the experiment made some small steps forward. The development of entity pooling techniques is a future priority, as is the ability of schools to make their own informed choices between alternative strategies for "inching up" in the final compilation stages.
