Focusing on adult education in Yugoslavia, this book is part of the series on adult education in Europe. The first of eight sections, traces historical development of adult education in Yugoslavia beginning with the second half of the nineteenth century and focusing on promotion of political awareness and socio-political education of the working class following World Wars I and II. Section 2 presents the social requirements, determining features, and structure of the educational system including ideological prerequisites based on Marxist philosophy. The third section describes the organization of schools for adults--independent institutions formed for remedial or vocational teaching. Sections 4 through 6 describe the relatively well-established, systematic formas of adult educaiton in the post-revolutionary period. Section 4 describes adult studies at Yugoslav universities including general trends and the development of part time studies. The fifth section focuses on the development and curricula of worker's and people's universities fomed in the 1940s and 1950s for general socio-political education and vocational training. Educational centers and other institutional forms of perservice and further vocational training are described in section 6. The seventh section presents rationale and description of adult education which operates outside the framework of established adult education institutions in such socio-political organizations as The Socialist Workers' Union, Trade Unions, the Youth Organization, the Union of Anti-Facist Fighters, and the Red Cross. The final section gives basic trends in the reform of the educational system in Yugoslavia. (LRA)
