Libraries' Place in Virtual Social Networks
Mathews, Brian S.
Journal of Web Librarianship, v1 n2 p71-74 2007
Do libraries belong in the virtual world of social networking? With more than 100 million users, this environment is impossible to ignore. A rising philosophy for libraries, particularly in blog-land, involves the concept of being where the users are. Simply using new media to deliver an old message is not progress. Instead, librarians should repackage their library's content into a ready-to-share-with-friends format and concentrate on forging a new function or identity. In this article, the author describes how the Georgia Tech Library was reshaped into a hybrid social-academic destination and how an online social networking tool, such as MySpace, can be used to broadcast this new identity.
