Ministry of Advanced Education
The purpose of the provincial ESL articulation process is to maintain high standards of quality in ESL programming at the public post-secondary institutions of British Columbia, as well as to facilitate access to programs at other public institutions for students wishing to transfer. Goals of the provincial articulation process are to: (1) provide a mechanism for the exchange of information and to enhance cooperation and coordination among those providing adult ESL instruction at British Columbia's public post-secondary institutions; (2) aid in the process of transferring ESL students between post-secondary institutions in BC; (3) promote ESL course equivalency among post-secondary institutions offerings where appropriate; and (4) facilitate inter-provincial transfer among Canadian ESL programs, using the Canadian Language Benchmarks. This edition of the ESL Articulation Guide outlines a descriptive framework of English as a Second Language for Adult courses and provides uniform and comprehensible terminology to describe these courses to professionals in the field. The guide notes the re-alignments of the Canadian Language Benchmark levels with the English for Academic Purposes outcomes. Contents of this guide include: (1) Introduction; (2) History of ESL Articulation; (3) ESL Articulation Process and Committees; (4) Strategies for Using the Guide; (5) English for Academic Purposes; (6) English for Access; and (7) English for Work.
