Study of the Labour Market for Academics.
Sloan, Judith; And Others
This report presents scenario projections of the demand for academics in Australia to the year 2002, together with supply side projections on the numbers of new higher degree holders offering themselves for academic employment in that country. Chapter 1 offers an introduction and review of background issues. The second chapter outlines the forecasting methodology used to project system-wide demand and supply trends as well as the case studies undertaken. Chapter 3 describes the student load projections that form the basis of the demand projections. Chapter 4 presents and discusses the scenario forecasts of the demand for academics to the year 2001. The demand for highly qualified individuals in competing markets is discussed in Chapter 5 as a logical antecedent to the supply projections presented in Chapter 6. In the seventh chapter, material from six case studies is assembled to describe how institutions have adjusted to budget-induced staff shortages and recruitment difficulties respectively. A summary and conclusion completes the report with the major finding that Australian higher education will not be able to provide the substantial number of additional staff it will require over the next decade. The text contains many tables and figures illustrating the content. (47 references) (JB)
