Prepare Healthy Foods with Toddlers
Izumi-Taylor, Satomi; Rike, Cheryl
Dimensions of Early Childhood, v39 n3 p27-34 2011
Toddlers--from about 16 to 36 months--can learn a variety of skills as they prepare food and follow recipes in developmentally appropriate ways. Early childhood teachers are encouraged to support young children's healthy eating habits by offering simple food preparation experiences. When toddlers--and preschoolers--safely prepare healthy snacks, they also learn math, science, literacy, socialization, and small-motor skills. This article recommends activities that have been implemented with toddlers, with some modifications based on classroom teachers' suggestions. A list of helpful Web sites for teachers is included.
