The Accessible Pantry: Food Identification Tips, Tools, and Techniques
Sokol-McKay, Debra A.; Michels, Dianne
RE:view: Rehabilitation Education for Blindness and Visual Impairment, v38 n3 p131-141 Fall 2006
For individuals with visual impairments, poorly designed labels can be barriers to receiving safe and independent access to important information about products in daily use. The authors discuss how organization and proper lighting can reduce the amount of labeling needed on food products and indicate how individuals with visual impairments can identify food products by using senses other than sight. They describe visual, tactile, visual-tactile, and audio labels; the materials available for making and mounting them; and how to develop labeling abbreviations.
