Maternal Resources, Parenting Practices, and Child Competence in Rural, Single-Parent African American Families.
Brody, Gene H.; Flor, Douglas L.
Child Development, v69 n3 p803-16 Jun 1998
Tested a model linking maternal/family characteristics to child cognitive and psychosocial competence in African-American 6- to 9-year olds in rural single-mother-headed households. Found that maternal education, religiosity, and financial resources were linked with parenting style, mother-child relationship, and maternal school involvement. Proximal variables were linked to children's cognitive competence, social competence, and internalizing problems through association with children's self-regulation. (Author)
