This article focuses on a report by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada which states that four-year public colleges in the United States have significantly more resources for teaching and research than do their counterparts in Australia, Canada, and Britain. According to the report, "Trends in Higher Education: Volume 3: Finance," the resource gap between Canadian and U.S. universities in particular has been growing over the past 30 years. The report compares the combined revenue for teaching and research, including tuition and government support, and finds that American institutions received $25,840 per student in 2006 while Canadian universities got $18,710 in revenue per student in 2006. Tom Traves, chairman of the association's board and president of Dalhousie University, in Nova Scotia states that the gap has serious implications for Canadian higher education and has inevitable consequences on both the character and quality of education. Comparisons of the four countries show that since 2000, both Australia and Britain have experienced significant increases in resources for higher education, bringing them roughly to the same revenue-per-student level in 2006 as Canada. The report predicts that universities in both Australia and Britain will continue to get more resources, thus bringing them closer to the U.S. levels.
