Supporting Self-Improvement in Teaching, Literacy, Language and Numeracy. Tools for Staff Development. Module 2: Assessment for Learning
Basic Skills Agency
The second in a series of five, module 2 provides everything one will need to run sharply focused, practical staff development training sessions for adult and Post-16 literacy, language and numeracy teachers. Each module addresses aspects of teaching and learning commonly identified as areas in need of improvement and can be used individually or as a full series, providing a comprehensive ready-made resource for continuous professional development. Module 2 supports teachers in making the best use of the outcomes of assessment so that learners learn effectively. Putting the learner at the heart of the teaching and learning process, this module examines practical ideas for how to: (1) make the purpose of assessment clear to learners; (2) set targets that learners can understand; (3) develop consistent approaches to marking and oral and written feedback; and (4) use questioning strategies to support learning. The materials are grounded in research and theory but provide very practical experience and activities that can be applied immediately in the classroom in a wide range of adult and post-16 contexts and settings. The units are broken down into bite-sized sections to allow for flexible delivery. Unit 1, Assessment for learning, contains: (1) Assessment; (2) Unpicking formative assessment; (3) Writing individual learning objectives, success criteria and learning outcomes; (4) Day to Day assessment; (5) Using questioning strategies; and (6) Day to day learner self-review. Unit 2, Diagnostic marking and feedback, contains: (1) Diagnostic marking and feedback--what is it?; (2) Oral feedback; (3) Written Feedback; (4) Modelling, scaffolding and independent construction; (5) Developing self and peer assessment; and (6) Marking and feedback policies. Everything an individual needs to run the training easily is included: trainer notes, activity sheets, handouts; presentations in Powerpoint format (on CD-ROM); contextualized learner profiles and ILPs (on CD-ROM) for use in the training activities. The resource also includes teaching and learning observation checklists, and lesson planning prompts to help participants put into practice what they have learned. Used in conjunction with the audit and materials in Tools for Managers, one will be able to select and deliver the most appropriate module in the series of Tools for Staff Development to address one's organisation's specific needs in improving teaching and learning in literacy, language and numeracy, resulting in greater learner satisfaction and improved achievement.
