Infants and Toddlers: Soothing and Comforting Babies
Honig, Alice Sterling
Early Childhood Today, v19 n3 p27-30 Nov-Dec 2004
Babies thrive on security. In early months, secure feelings stem from being warm, cuddled closely, and comfortable in their tummies (and in having clean bottoms!). In this article, the author discusses how to soothe infants and toddlers. The strategies to help ease babies' distress are described. Some of the recommended strategies include: (1) to address babies' fear of falling, swaddle the baby with a receiving blanket to help him/her feel secure and confident that they will not fall; (2) to address empty tummy troubles, realize that inner signals from an empty stomach cause upset, despairing feelings that compel babies to use the strongest method they have to call for help; and (3) to address possible loud noises that scare babies, arrange one's environment so that infant care spaces are quiet and peaceful. Activities that comfort and soothe infants and toddlers are also presented.
