How to Make Friends and Influence the Media.
Institute for Information Studies, Falls Church, VA.
The book is intended to aid the public information and advocacy efforts in such agencies as consumer organizations, independent living centers, rehabilitation facilities, and state vocational rehabilitation agencies. An introductory section reviews the language of disability, citing examples from the media in which disabled individuals are depicted in unrealistic and unhelpful ways. Steps in mounting a media campaign are discussed, including defining the desired image, determining objectives, identifying the audience, and harnessing the resources. Suggestions are given for approaching newspapers, magazines, radio and television, and other media. A section on the media and the law details such aspects as the "Fairness Doctrine" and public broadcasting as well as copyright, libel, and slander issues. Such tools as news releases, press kits, public service announcements, and newsletters are discussed. The booklet concludes with ideas of specific activities and projects to make news, confront negative images directly, and engage in guerilla theatre. A bibliography of 34 citations is included. (CL)
