Online Options for Math-Advanced Students
Wessling, Suki
Understanding Our Gifted, v25 n1 p2-8 Fall 2012
Once upon a time, a student well advanced past grade level in math would have had few choices. Advanced students would invariably outpace the skills of their elementary teachers, and due to age wouldn't have options such as going to the middle school or community college for classes. Soon thereafter, students would enter middle school only to find that they had exhausted middle school curriculum, and again they would have to wait or go to the high school for classes. Some high schools would be able to accommodate an advanced student, but many other would have the same advice: wait. The age of the Internet has changed every facet of education, but for the advanced student, the availability of math resources has possibly been the most fundamental change of all. Math learning is an explosive area in online curriculum, from math games to online math classes. Literally anything that an advanced math student cannot get from his or her school can be found on the Internet. This article offers some online options for math-advanced students.
