The Bases of Competence. Skills for Lifelong Learning and Employability.
Evers, Frederick T.; Rush, James C.; Berdrow, Iris
This book, which is intended primarily for instructional development specialists, academic leaders, and faculty members in all types of postsecondary institutions, explains what skills and competencies students need to succeed in today's workplace and details how colleges and universities can strengthen the curriculum to cultivate those skills in their undergraduate students. The book is based on the research program Making the Match between University Graduates and Corporate Employers. (In this research, executives and university presidents identified technical skills essential for workplace mastery.) Chapters 1-9 discuss the following topics: the "humbling" effect of moving from college to the workplace; creating a common language about competence; managing self; communicating; managing people and tasks; mobilizing innovation and change; closing the gap between campuses and workplaces; fostering workplace skills in the college curriculum; and building on collegiate learning in the workplace. The following case studies constitute chapters 10-12: "Teaching World of Work Skills within a Degree Program: Ontario Agricultural College" (Andre Auger); "Listening to the Customer: External Assessment of Competencies at Babson College" (Joseph R. Weintraub, James M. Hunt, William S. Brown, Constance G. Bosse, Stephen J. Schiffman); and "Cultivating Competence to Sustain Competitive Advantage: The Bank of Montreal" (James Logan). Appended are the Making the Match year 3 questionnaires (skill sections) for students, graduates, and managers. The book contains 136 references. (MN)
