Children are exposed to a wide variety of images related to New York City through various media outlets. They may have seen glimpses of Manhattan by watching movies such as Spiderman or Stuart Little or by taking in annual television events such as the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade or the Times Square New Year's Eve celebration. Additionally, they may hear coined phrases related to the city such as "New York Minute" or "a New York State of Mind" or may have sung a few bars of Liza Minelli's famous rendition of "New York, New York." Although many children may be familiar with New York from such cultural icons, unless they are within commuting distance, the vast majority of students will not get to experience New York City except through these audio and video "samples." Children's literature is another tool teachers can employ to share the city with their students. This article recommends and describes in detail several children's books that can be used to teach about Manhattan, one of New York's five boroughs. A list of Websites about Manhattan that teachers and upper-elementary grade students might enjoy using when researching the history, architecture, or culture of Manhattan is also included.
