Instructional Design of Entrepreneurship Courses: Interview Research of Wyoming BRAVO! Entrepreneurs
Kolb, Belinda J.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Wyoming
This qualitative study investigated the opportunity recognition process of Wyoming BRAVO! Entrepreneur (WBE) Award winners or nominees, in order to better inform the learner analysis and organizational strategy components of instructional design, specifically with respect to entrepreneurship courses. This study may be of significance to post secondary educators and academic deans, government and private industry because each of these entities at some point is a stakeholder in the process of preparing and/or interacting with future community members of all ages who are successful in creating new businesses or being effective employees in private industry, education and government. The foundation for this research was the consideration of what can be learned from interviewing WBEs and how potential findings can inform and shape the instructional design of opportunity recognition courses for community college entrepreneurship education. The constructionism epistemology supported and informed the research in that the construction of meaning and knowledge was grounded in the reality of the experiences of the interview participants or "subjects" with their businesses or the "objects" of their worlds. The study consisted of a major and minor dataset. The major dataset was the interview data from which major themes were derived, which provided insight regarding learner analysis and organizational strategies for instructional design of entrepreneurship education. Study findings indicate that the entrepreneurs seek both formal and informal types of entrepreneurship education and training at nearly equal rates. They are largely a sharing learner among their peer group and persistent in their quest to find relevant information to aid in the survival of their businesses. Instructional design of benefit to an entrepreneurship learner will be respective of the learner attributes of internal locus of control, ascertain specific prior knowledge and trend toward use of mostly generative organizational strategies. As learners, emerging entrepreneurs are quite focused and can be expected to step in and out of learning events according to the business need they are experiencing at the time. They want focused and pertinent information directly applicable to their specific market or business industry. The minor dataset, while not conclusive, was still interesting with regard to its alignment toward the existing Panel Study for Entrepreneurial Dynamics. (PSED) longitudinal data.
