The teaching of the Bible in the public schools of the United States is reviewed, and the failings of current materials in the field are discussed. Responses and recommendations by teachers faced with current limitations on the teaching of the Bible are recorded. Using these recommendations as well as some of the ones emanating from the Bible as Literature project at Indiana University (especially recommendations for certain secular literature to supplement biblical study), a series of resources and activities for the teaching of the Bible as literature are suggested. These include materials suitable for units on (1) the influence of the Bible on English literature, (2) the influence of the Bible on our language, and (3) the history of biblical times. Some suggested learning-objectives to be implemented in the teaching of the Bible as literature are also included. The objectives reflect the importance of presenting a variety of interpretations in the class discussions. The concluding section deals with matters of tests and measurements and other evaluative procedures particularly suited to a course of this nature. (Author/LL)
