A Longitudinal Study of Student Outcomes at a State University. AIR Forum 1980 Paper.
Endo, Jean J.; Harpel, Richard L.
The impact of liberal arts and professional programs on student outcomes variables was studied. Data were gathered from the 1975 entering freshman cohort at the University of Colorado at Boulder through a 1975 Freshman Questionnaire and a 1979 Graduating Students Survey. Program impact was measured using a model developed by Astin. Type of program was found to have at least some impact on 14 variables which also showed clear overall patterns of change over time and on which there were important output (senior year) differences by program type. The general picture which emerged is the suggestion that the college experience for professional program students had a somewhat focusing and narrowing effect while for liberal arts students it appeared to have a more broadening effect. Substantial benefits for the liberal arts students were indicated. (Author/SW)
