Continuing his tales from the old Ojibway teachings, Mishomis takes up the story of Original Man after he is separated from Wolf. Because he still has many questions, the Creator sends him to find No-ko-mis (Grandmother) who has the wisdom of the spirits. Since she lives far across the water, Original Man has to use his ability and reasoning as a human being to discover a way of reaching her. After he finally reaches her lodge, Original Man provides for the Grandmother and in turn she teaches him the practical means of daily survival as well as the secrets of the universe. She sends him on a long and hazardous journey to the Fire Keeper, who bestows upon him the special gift of fire, given by the Creator. He returns to share it with the Grandmother. No-ko-mis tells Original Man about the existence of his mother, father, and twin brother and that there are many things in the world waiting for him to discover and learn from. When their time together comes to an end, No-ko-mis goes to a special place beyond the earth and Original Man sets out to seek his family. Before they part, however, she gives him his name, Anishinabe. Like the other books in this series, the book includes vocabulary of Ojibway words, fill-in-the-blank exercises, and study questions.
