Friendships are important not only to youth development but also to the growth and expansion of social networks. Although there has long been acknowledgment of this importance for youth, such relationships can be especially elusive for transition-age students with autism, intellectual disability, and other developmental disabilities. This article focuses on research-based approaches for promoting interactions and relationships among adolescents with developmental disabilities and their peers in school and community settings. Peer-mediated support interventions comprise an effective, feasible, and natural approach for fostering friendships during secondary school.
