Improving Student Behavior through Character Education.
Battersby, Mary Jo; And Others
This report describes a program for building and reinforcing character development in order to increase appropriate student-to-student and student-to-teacher behaviors. The targeted population consists of primary and intermediate elementary students in a growing middle class community in Elk Grove, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. The problems of inappropriate interactions and lack of good citizenship were observed and documented through behavior checklists, anecdotal records, and journal responses. Analysis of probable cause data revealed that students lacked skills related to conflict resolution, work ethic, respect, and civic responsibilities. Other causes included the change in the family structure, a general increase in peer pressure, and inadequate adult role models. Reviews of curriculum content and instructional strategies revealed a need for a character education program that emphasized social and personal skill development. A review of solution strategies suggested by knowledgeable others, combined with an analysis of the problem setting, resulted in the selection of a program to enhance character development for students in the targeted schools.
