Unit Resource Book on Slavery.
Minneapolis Public Schools, Minn.
This integrated social studies and English resource unit for secondary students on plantation slavery in the United States contains readings which provide an opportunity for the student to learn in an effective way how enslavement feels. In Part One, Social Studies, historical source materials are offered consisting of essays of slaves and freemen expressing personal opinions; observations and recollections; letters; advertisements; and autobiographies. These materials are intended to expose students in some depth to the enslavement problem and to enable them to evaluate the past and better understand the present. Inhumane treatment of slaves, various interpretations of black exploitation, and revolts stemming from the denial of basic humanity are dealt with. In Part Two, English, a collection of essays, stories, poems, dramas and music, thought provoking material is provided on slavery, the human experience, and the desire for freedom as a basis for student questions on: 1) what it means to be a human being and to have relationships with other human beings; 2) what needs must be met for man to have and to maintain dignity; and, 3) what elements call forth responsive action in an effort to give liberty and justice for all.
