Sexual and Relationship Education Taught in California's Special Education
Marie Choi
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, California State University, Los Angeles
Students with disabilities who are identified to receive special education services have the right to a free and appropriate public education until they reach the age of 21 according to The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act [IDEA] (2004). This includes developmentally appropriate sex and reproductive health education for youth with disabilities, which are often not addressed in schools (Graham Holmes, 2021). While California is one of the few states in the US that requires SRE many important topics are ignored the often includes limited teaching materials that do not align themselves to the needs of students with disabilities. This study examined the perspectives and experiences of teachers who have taught or observed SRE being taught in California schools; it also looked at the available curriculum used in the schools where the participants teach. Findings indicate that teachers feel underprepared to teach SRE to students with disabilities and that the curriculum used in their schools does not meet the needs of all students. They argued for the need for more professional development and better materials, but also felt constrained by the districts they teach.
