This document presents an overview of trends and statistics pertaining to community colleges. The opening charts offer a national view of population served, tuition and revenue data, and popular degrees and career fields. The state-by-state section provides detailed information on each of the 50 states, plus the Pacific Islands and Puerto Rico. For each profile, an introduction summarizes "hot" issues based on interviews with community college representatives. Following each summary are detailed statistics on student characteristics, tuition, faculty salaries, expenditures, educational attainment, state demographics, and workforce issues. Although each state system is unique, the states often share common priorities and challenges. Several states have decided to merge disparate colleges or community and technical colleges into cohesive systems. More than ever, states and colleges pursue creative partnerships in order to respond effectively to industry needs and to create a more seamless transition among education sectors. States continue to invest heavily in technology programs and computer systems, and they seek to apply technology through various distance education options. Several states still enjoy the benefit of a healthy national economy, although a few are experiencing a decline in population and must work to help encourage economic growth. Contains 23 references.
