Change in Moral Outlook Is an Important Topic of Environmental Education
Suohua, Li
Chinese Education and Society, v37 n4 p11-15 Jul-Aug 2004
It is a common recognition that humankind is facing an ecological environmental crisis. In order to protect the ecological system, to protect nature and thus to safeguard the continued existence of humankind, not only technological, economic, and managerial measures are needed, but more importantly, a change must take place in people's thinking so that people will take the initiative to protect nature. Given this, the author believes that a change in outlook should be effected in four aspects through environmental education. Here, the author discusses these aspects: (1) change the value system based on human chauvinism; (2) change the developmental paradigm that overemphasizes economic growth; (3) change the outlook on life that worships excessive material consumption; and (4) change the view of procreation that overemphasizes pursuit of population growth.
