Education, Learning, and Communications, Undergraduate Studies in Environmental Science, Session 1.
Hafner, Everett M.; And Others
This set of two cassette tapes resulted from the 1969 AAAS conference on undergraduate environmental science. The topics selected for the seminar were: (1) What is the Field of Environmental Science and how does it relate to the Ecological crisis? (2) What should be the role and the goals of the educational institutions in dealing with these crises? (3) How should an educational program for undergraduates be structured? (4) What problems are to be expected in providing such an educational program and how may they be overcome? Dr. Singer presented a paper titled "Education For Today's Ecological Crisis." The paper focused on scientific education in a university enrollment, new observational techniques, and central and satellite problems to an environmental issue. Dr. Hart's presentation was titled "Education for Tomorrow." The speaker separated mission and subject matter oriented curriculums. Sociological aspects of undergraduate programs in environmental sciences with the main emphasis being science and society was the topic of Dr. Stephens presentation. The arranger of the first session, Dr. Everett Hafner presented a paper on "Ecography." Comments concluding the first session were made by Dr. Eugene Rothkin, University of Wisconsin College of Environmental Sciences, who presented a short explanation of the academic plan at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. George Cox, San Diego State, presented an outline of the university's newly adopted undergraduate program in systems ecology. (The cassette tapes vary in auditory quality; parts are difficult to understand due to noise recorded.) (BB)
