Service-Learning in Higher Education: Focus on Eating Disorder Prevention
Roofe, Nina; Brinegar, Jennifer; Seymour, Gayle
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v107 n2 p41-48 2015
Interdisciplinary service-learning projects are mutually beneficial for communities and students. This service-learning project focused on eating disorder prevention and involved students majoring in nutrition, art, and psychology at a public Southern university. The nutrition majors completed the Eating Attitudes Test before and after the project, assisted with the delivery of an eating disorder awareness dance performance in local elementary schools, and reflected on their experiences. The nutrition majors in this study did not demonstrate a significant change in their own eating attitudes and behaviors as a result of the learning experience, but they did reflect positive feelings regarding service-learning, community responsibility, and community partnerships.
