Drinking and Driving among College Students: The Influence of Alcohol-Control Policies
Journal of American College Health, v53 n4 p192 Jan 2005
Randomly selected full-time college students attending four-year colleges in 39 states completed a questionnaire about alcohol consumption and driving. The results revealed that 29 percent of the students drove after drinking some amount of alcohol 10 percent drove after drinking five or more drinks, and 23 percent rode with a driver who was high or drunk. Higher percentages of men. Euro American students. Greek members, students aged 21 to 23 years, and pre-college binge drinkers engaged in drinking and driving. Higher rates of drinking and driving occurred at larger schools and schools in the southern and north-central regions. The students who attended schools in states with more restrictions on underage drinking and that devoted more resources to enforcing drunk-driving laws reported less drinking and driving.
