The Teaching of Philosophy: Renewed Rights and Responsibilities
Egea-Kuehne, Denise
Educational Philosophy and Theory, v35 n3 p271-284 Jul 2003
After 12 years, the long overdue translation of Derrida's "Du droit a la philosophie" has just been made available in English. It is a collection of essays, interviews, and conferences produced by Derrida between 1974 and 1990. They focus on questions of education and research, in schools and universities, with a critical reflection on academic and political institutions, especially on the institutions of philosophy themselves and on the right to access to these institutions and to philosophy. Access to philosophy and right to philosophy and to the teaching of philosophy are more than ever burning topics, requiring renewed thinking in the current context of globalization. Derrida most recently discussed these issues in a May 2002 interview, during a special program on his work aired on French television. In this interview, Derrida precisely talked about the "privilege" of philosophy, and the necessity of access and of right to philosophy, today. Based on a close reading of Derrida's texts, this article proposes to explore the notion of heritage of a "philosophical memory" before beginning to address the necessity of a right to philosophy and to the teaching of philosophy in the current sociopolitical context, as well as the concurrent call to renewed responsibility.
