Effective Child Guidance: An Educator's Guidebook.

This guidebook is designed to assist educators in becoming more effective child guidance leaders within the school system. Sections discuss the following areas: (1) indicators of current emotional problems; (2) children's common emotional problems, including fears, separation and loss, misbehavior motivations, aggressiveness, stealing, lying, shyness, hyperactivity, hospitalization anxiety, wetting and soiling, and childhood sensuality; (3) predictors of future emotional problems; (4) affective education, specifically considering the DUSO (Developing Understanding of Self and Others) curriculum, "magic circles," classroom meetings, and the building of an affective education program; (5) relaxation training and guided imagery; (6) the role of the mental health professional; (7) guidance activities such as the Georgia Comprehensive Guidance Series, primary guidance activities, role playing, bibliotherapy, and the five faces technique; and (8) professional stress. Aspects considered under this heading are: the relationship between education and stress; dealing with stress; identifying sources of stress; physical needs; relaxation training; time management; support systems; and rethinking in the areas of nonassertiveness, conflicts, and illogical thought patterns. The guidance activities section of the manual includes a list of materials useful for bibliotherapy in the areas of capabilities, death, differences, divorce, cooperation, emotions, fears, family concerns, handicaps, medical concerns, school, and shyness.
