Young People and the Law.
Autlin, Diana
This pamphlet was developed to inform teenagers of their civil rights and to encourage them to organize in order to seek more equitable rights. The book is not recommended for classroom use, but rather is written as resource material for young people avidly interested in their rights and in the discrimination against young people by the legal system. Separate chapters discuss the rights to free expression, privacy, protection against illegal search and seizure, equal protection under the law, and due process. The topics of involuntary servitude, cruel and unusual punishment, and legal remedies are also examined. Each chapter presents the constitutional background and legal precedents for each concept, provides insets which feature accounts of incidents relevant to each concept, and illustrates the concepts with captioned drawings. Unfamiliar legal terms are defined in a glossary and a short bibliography is provided for those who want to research the subjects more thoroughly. Two Supreme Court decisions (Tinker v. Des Moines, which extended constitutional rights to children, and the Gerald Gault case concerned with criminal due process rights) are reprinted in the appendix. (KC)
