Contemporary literature on vocational stewardship offers suggestions for pastors and ministry leaders wanting to engage Christians in vocational discipleship. These suggestions seem to represent current "best practices" in vocational discipleship. Analyzing these "best practices" using Brueggemann's canonical framework for education reveals a noticeable gap in vocational discipleship methodologies (1982). Specifically, little attention is paid to the role of imagination in vocational discipleship. Because of the eschatological, forward-looking nature of Christian calling, this study examined the role of imagining the future in vocational discipleship. To fill the methodological gap in vocational discipleship, this study developed the 4D-R method of imagining the future and explored adult evangelical Christians' experience with the 4D-R method. For the purposes of this study, the 4D-R method was embedded in a reflective journal called the Imagine the Future Journal.
