Hardness of hearing or deafness is the number one disability in the United States. The United States also has an extremely diverse population, including a growing Hispanic population. Based on these facts, physical educators need to find ways to help their students to overcome language and cultural barriers in order to ensure learning. One way to improve communication with and among diverse students would be for the physical education teacher to present part of his or her own class material in Spanish or sign language to all the students in the class. This article describes how infusing language into physical education classes can enhance cross-curricular learning and create a richer, more accepting and diverse environment for everyone.
