The Army began working in partnership with the Basic Skills Agency in 2000. This was formalised with the establishment of the Basic Skills Agency's National Support Project for the Army (2001) that contributes to the raising of basic skills standards in the Army by advising on, and assisting with, the development of the Army's basic skills policy and its implementation across the Service. The Basic Skills Agency provides a development officer on full-time secondment to conduct this work, to ensure its alignment to national good practice and to undertake research and development trials of basic skills initiatives in the Service context. The National Support Project for the Army has been extended a further year to March 2008. The Army's Director of Human Resources is the Adjutant General. He lends total support to the basic skills programme and has called on the advice of his Director of Educational and Training Services (Army) (DETS(A)) to design the Service's basic skills infrastructure and recommend the necessary performance targets. Within the Army, the Basic Skills Agency's development officer works to DETS(A). This publication is a summary of the Army's basic skills developments since 2001 and a strategic review of the lessons learnt from this work, with a particular focus on taking a whole organisation approach to addressing workforce basic skills issues within large organisations.
