The International Children's Digital Library Enhances the Multicultural Collection
Lemmons, Karen
School Library Media Activities Monthly, v25 n7 p28-30 Mar 2009
In this article, the author talks about the International Children's Digital Library (ICDL), an online digital library which gives students an opportunity to read and learn about other cultures and countries in a different way. The library's web site (http://www.icdlbooks.org) was designed by children, with the guidance and expertise of adults. The books on ICDL are carefully chosen for their literary and cultural merits. The library now has a collection of thousands of books written in hundreds of languages. Special collections and award-winning books are included in ICDL. ICDL offers many opportunities for the library media specialist to integrate it into the curriculum. If the school district has adopted a theme based Language Arts program, ICDL has books that can match practically any theme. It also has a page that provides suggestions for using the books and a teacher-training manual. The statement, "one can travel the world through reading," comes to life with the books in ICDL. Students can read and learn about many countries and travel the world without leaving the computer.
