New and Emerging Occupations Project. Final Report.

This document reports a project to define, identify, and describe new and emerging occupations in Nebraska and disseminate that information to vocational education program and curriculum planners. Chapter 1 describes the background, problem, and purpose of the project. Chapter 2 sets forth the objectives and discusses procedures for developing a statewide definition, identifying potential new and emerging occupations, and obtaining occupational information. Chapter 3 contains the Nebraska definition and copies of brochures prepared for each new or emerging occupation in Nebraska. Each brochure provides this information: overview of occupation, projected demand, typical employers, major duties, present source of skilled workers, wages and hours, list of sources for additional information, brief project description, and complete listing of new and emerging occupations. These occupations are included: automotive diesel technician, automotive electronics technician, alcohol plant technician, bio-medical equipment repair technician, dietetic technician, home health aide, human services worker, industrial hygiene technician, legal assistant, multi-competency health technician, nuclear power technician, podiatric assistant, semi-trailer mechanic, solar energy technician, diagnostic medical sonographer, swine confinement specialist, tumor registrar, vending machine repair, word processing specialist. Chapter 4 summarizes conclusions and recommendations. Activity flow charts, sample questionnaires, and occupational data collection forms are appended. (YLB)
