The 18 papers in this anthology have been grouped into four sections, arranged partially by topic. These papers have been selected to represent the ideas and views put forward at the 2004 RELC International Seminar on "Innovative Approaches to Reading & Writing Instruction" held April 19-21, 2004. Of the 18 papers contained in this volume, some deal specifically with reading, some with writing, while others discuss unique problems and approaches to developing literacy skills. This book is divided into the following four sections. Section I, Plenary Speaker Papers, includes the following papers: (1) Free Voluntary Reading: New Research, Applications, and Controversies (Stephen Krashen); (2) Vocabulary Learning through Extensive Reading (Paul Nation); (3) Innovation: Going beyond "Success" (Dick Allwright); (4) Teaching Reading and Writing from a Literacies Perspective (Anne Burns); (5) The Pedagogical Imagination, New Times and Changing Textual Ecologies (Moses Samuel); and (6) Reading in Singapore Primary Classrooms: Realities and Aspirations (Ruth Wong). Section II, Focus on Reading, presents papers: (7) Teaching Reading Strategies: "It Really Takes Time!" (Tom Farrell); (8) Reeling Them In: A Beginning Reading Programme at Fuchun Primary School (Lim Cheng Liew and Cheah Yin Mee); (9) What to Teach? Procedural & Declarative Knowledge Significant to Reading Comprehension Ability (Isabelle Shanti Benjamin); and (10) Assessing Understanding of Inference in Reading (Angela Rogers). Section III, Focus on Writing, includes papers: (11) Portfolio, Student Reflections, and the Teaching of ESL/EFL Writing (Xudong Deng); (12) Breeze for the Soul: Using Literacy Texts in the Writing Class (Nugrahenny T. Zacharias); (13) Creating Texts in The Real World--More than Just Writing (Stephen Bremner); (14) The Value of Different Types of Grammar Feedback for Improving ESL Writing (John Bitchener, Stuart Young, and Denise Cameron); and (15) The Community-Apprentice-Process (CAP) Approach to Teaching Writing (Roger Everett and Laura Everett). Finally, Section IV, Unique Problems and Approaches in Developing Literacy Skills, presents the concluding papers of the book: (16) Who Does What inside the Computer? Process Description in Computing Science Texts (Gillian Perrett); (17) Building Academic Discourse Skills in Chat Rooms (Maria Sit, Peter Mickan, and Caroline Gray); and (18) Training Bilingual Tutors to Teach English Literacy to Pre-Literate Refugees (Jeannie Martin Blaker).
