Few Schools Are Ready to Manage a Crisis
Dolan, Thomas G.
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v72 n2 p4-8 Oct 2006
Most colleges and universities are poorly prepared to efficiently address and manage crises. That is the finding of a survey, the results of which were in the January/February issue of the publication, "Change." The authors point to Hurricane Katrina and the 9/11 terrorist attacks as wake-up calls to higher education and maintain both that campus administrators haven't woken up enough and that they never should have needed these extreme examples of natural and man-made disasters. Michael A. Diamond, Certified Public Accountant, professor at USC, and emeritus vice president and executive vice provost, says that there are things schools can do to get on the right path. Unless they do, the types of crises may negatively affect university reputation, enrollment, funding, and morale. A key factor, he says, is having a management team already in place, one trained and ready to respond to crises. It is also critical to anticipate where the next crisis might strike so that advance planning can take place, and to learn from the experience of other schools.
