A program integrating cost awareness--a perspective balancing the physician's ethical obligations to individual patients with duties to the society that pays medical costs--into major required courses of the four-year medical curriculum addresses the social aspects of medical care, patient care strategy, resource utilization, and the legal system and professional ethics.
