Tapping the Magic of Musical Theater for Exceptional Children
Grumich, Rob
Exceptional Parent, v38 n3 p46-47 Mar 2008
Music improves spatial reasoning, which is vital to strengthening the mental circuits used for mathematics. Dance develops critical thinking skills along with persistence and perseverance. Drama becomes a partner in the development of abstract thought and speaking skills. And the larger process of creating musical theater encourages cooperation, compromise, and commitment. This article features STAGES St. Louis, a not-for-profit, musical theater production company that has developed "Access the Arts" and "Troupe Broadway" programs for exceptional children. Parents of children who have participated in the STAGES programs are effusive about the benefits of musical theater training. The author takes a look inside the "Access the Arts" program and discusses two steps that were most critical to its success.
