Five Societal Conflicts that Will Define School Facilities in the 21st Century
Stevenson, Kenneth R.
ERS Spectrum, v24 n3 p29-39 Sum 2006
America is changing and, as it does, so will its educational system. This article examines demographic changes the country is experiencing, the conflicts these changes are generating, and how education--and particularly school facilities--may be different in the future as a result. Conflicts addressed include (a) baby boomers versus an emerging new majority, (b) free market enterprise versus providing for the public good, (c) differences of opinion about what purpose education should serve, (d) the role of people versus machines, and (e) choice versus inclusiveness of association. An overview of each conflicting situation is followed by a delineation of specific issues generated, how the issues may affect school facilities, and what policy makers can consider in addressing the conflict.
