Developed to provide seventh and eight grade students information about careers in the health occupational cluster, this booklet may be used to integrate career information with various subject areas. (It is one of several student booklets developed for use in the Ohio Career Orientation Program at grades 7 and 8 to assist students in making tentative career decisions for exploration activities in grades 9 and 10.) Ten major categories of health occupations are briefly described: operations, health information systems, health services delivery, mental health, accident and emergency services, dental science and services, medical science and services, biologic science and technology, health services administration, and pharmaceutical science and services. A closer look at seven specific careers is provided through brief case studies of one individual working in each job: hospital administrator, medical record technician, intensive care nurse, physician, dentist, occupational therapist, and pharmacist. Related jobs are listed under each. Brief exploration activities are suggested through which students can learn more about the jobs. A chart is provided with notes on how various school subjects (home economics, English, social science, industrial arts, physical education, music, science, art, and mathematics) are related to the health cluster careers. A list of qualities needed for health careers and a list of sources for additional career information (professional associations and specific government bulletins) are included along with a vocabulary list and information on projected job opportunities in the various areas.
