Education, Work and Employment--Volume II. Segmented Labour Markets, Workplace Democracy and Educational Planning, Education and Self-Employment.
Carnoy, Martin; And Others
This volume contains three studies covering separate yet complementary aspects of the problem of the relationships between the educational system and the production system as manpower user. The first monograph on the theories of the markets seeks to answer two questions: what can be learned from the work done on the segmentation of the labor market? and Is clear-cut empirical evidence available to judge the validity of this theory? A critical presentation of various models of labor markets is followed by an examination of the implications for policy-making of the findings of studies in the United States, Singapore, Brazil, Peru, Mexico, and Cameroon. The second contribution focuses on a recent change in some industrialized countries--greater democracy and worker participation in the workplace--and tries to trace its implications for the educational system and educational planning. The third contribution addresses the issue of self-employment. Some of the most recent developments in the area of education for self-employment are reviewed: school vocationalization in Rwanda, Liberia, Kenya, Zambia; formalization of village technology--school as production units in Guinea and Tanzania; diversification of schools; and education for youth and the community.
