On Track to Their Dreams
Morrow, Jennifer Glenn; Torrez, Alex
Educational Leadership, v69 n7 p74-77 Apr 2012
Like all early college high schools, Clear Horizons Early College High School in Houston, Texas, tries to help its students earn a high school diploma and a two-year associate's degree simultaneously through taking dual credit courses while in high school. Although many of the school's students were successful, Clear Horizon's leaders realized that there was room for improvement in helping its students navigate the college application process. The school reaches out mainly to students who are first-generation college goers or in some way at risk of not advancing academically. Many need to begin the college search process early to find schools well-matched to their interests and to gain financial aid. Among the strategies discussed are mentoring; monitoring students' goals; reviewing students' transcripts with them regularly; administering many practice SATs; and guiding students to complete all steps of the application process during the high school day and by the fall of their senior year.
