Wilderness Education Association Affiliates and Service-Learning: Where Do They Stand?
Poff, Raymond; Harris, Matthew; Spencer, Steve
Journal of the Wilderness Education Association, v17 n3 p15-16 Win 2005
The purpose of this article is to report the findings of a study, conducted among Wilderness Education Association Affiliates, aimed at understanding the service-learning options provided. Several definitions and viewpoints regarding service-learning can be found throughout the literature; only a few are presented to introduce the topic. E-mails were sent in early 2005 to 57 WEA affiliates inviting them to participate in an on-line survey about the service-learning options they made available to students. Four invitations were returned due to undeliverable addresses. Several WEA affiliates offer their students options for service learning. With perceived benefits of enhancing the educational experience, developing environmental ethics, creating a sense of place, and complementing the WEA curriculum, it appears that service-learning has a place within outdoor/leadership/resource management and/or WEA programs.
