Job Search Manual for Mature Workers.
Merrill, Fred L.
This document is designed to help mature persons find the "right" professional, managerial, or technical jobs. Section 1 introduces the materials. Section 2 shows job seekers how to write a general statement that defines the nature of the position desired and how to assess their skills, abilities, interests, work values, and personal qualities they bring to a job. Section 3 guides job seekers through the preparation of a job resume. Worksheets and sample resumes are included. Section 4 describes where to find job openings and includes worksheets to be completed regarding the job seekers' personal and professional contacts and employment advertisements, sample letters to reply to ads, sample thank-you letters for interviews, and an 11-item bibliography. Section 5 contains advice about preparing for, conducting, and following up on an employment interview. Section 6 contains worksheets on which the job seeker can plan daily activities and a week's activities, lists of resources, and a list of 21 books for further reading. Section 7 addresses age discrimination; overqualification; and what to do when a prospective employer believes that the job seeker's last salary or previous status was too high, that it would be inappropriate for the older worker to work for a younger supervisor, that older workers are absent more, that older people are inflexible, or that older people want to work for only a short time. This section also suggests ways of dealing with rejection and feelings of depression. (CML)
