Museums, Educators, and Social Action
Sellars, Peter
Journal of Museum Education, v35 n1 p103-110 Spr 2010
In the autumn of 2009, Peter Sellars addressed the Museum Educators of Southern California and reflected on the importance of museums as places where our spiritual, intellectual, imaginative, emotional and complicated selves can find sustenance, recognition and acceptance. Drawing on his twenty-eight years of work in the arts and his global perspective, Sellars presents a compelling case for a practice rooted in giving voice to the voiceless, encouraging deep reciprocal relationships with our museum objects, finding space for silence and keeping museums untamed. What follows is part of the talk, transcribed by Liz Dinerstein and edited for this format. The full text and audio of the talk can be found at www.mesconline.com.
